Mayo Clinic well-being presentation, Ohio State physiology talk highlight week's events

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

Mayo Clinic well-being director to describe culture creation

Beth Riley, director of employee well-being and director of the Dan Abraham Health Living Center at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, will give the UMMC Office of Wellbeing-sponsored presentation, "Creating a Culture of Well-being at the Mayo Clinic," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, in lecture hall 124 of the medical education building.

Riley will provide information on the history of the program at the Mayo Clinic; core programs and services; and how they are measuring the impact on the culture.

Wednesday, Feb. 6

Ohio State CV researcher to talk diabetic coronary disease

Dr. Aaron J. Trask, assistant professor at the Center for Cardiovascular Research, the Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Coronary Microvascular Disease in Early Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: From Remodeling and Biomechanics to Prediction Algorithms," from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Population Health, CI faculty to discuss cancer outcomes

Dr. Michelle S. Williams, assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Population Health Science and in the UMMC Cancer Institute, will give the next CI Grand Rounds presentation, “Improving Cancer Outcomes in Mississippi: A Call to Action,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Thursday, Feb. 7

LSU nutrition chair to discuss how to tip obesity's scale

Dr. John P. Kirwan, executive director and George A. Bray Jr. Endowed Super Chair in Nutrition and professor and director of the Integrated Physiology and Molecular Metabolism Laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University, will present “Tipping the Scale on Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes – Knife, Fork or Sneakers,” at noon on Thursday, Feb. 7 in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.

Microbiology faculty to discuss cytomegalovirus trafficking

Dr. Ritesh Tandon, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, will present the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology seminar, "Manipulation of Host Vesicular Trafficking by Cytomegalovirus During Maturation," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, in classroom 3A.

MS SC justice to speak at GWIMS Connect Share Advance event

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Dawn Beam will present the Group on Women in Medicine and Science "Connect Share Advance" seminar, "Lean In: Perspectives from a Mississippi Supreme Court Justice," at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in room CW 308 of the Classroom Wing.

UMass faculty to offer temperamental leadership enhancement

Dr. Luanne Thorndyke, professor of medicine and vice provost for faculty affairs at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science workshop, "The Power of Utilizing Temperaments to Enhance Your Leadership Capabilities," from 10 a.m.-noon on Friday, Feb. 22, in second-floor conference rooms A-D in the student union.
